The general public is hereby informed that a proposed 2026 Fiscal Year Budget including the Budget for the City of Nelson, Georgia is available for review at Nelson City Hall, located at 1985 Kennesaw Avenue, Nelson, Georgia and that a public hearing shall be held on the 2025 Fiscal Year Budget on Monday, June 2, 2025 at 7:00pm at City Hall, 1985 Kennesaw Avenue, Nelson, Georgia. Notice is hereby given that, in accordance with O.C.G.A. § 21-2-540, a special election shall be held in Pickens County to fill the vacancy in the office of City Council, caused by the resignation of John Ahlberg. The special election will be held on June 17, 2025.
Qualifying for the special election shall be held at the Pickens County Board of
Elections & Registration, 3100 Camp Road, Suite B, Jasper GA 30143 beginning at 8:30 am on May 5, 2025 and ending at 4:30 pm on May 7, 2025. The qualifying fee shall be $25.00.
All persons who are not registered to vote and who desire to register to vote in the special election may register to vote through the close of business on May 19, 2025. Early voting will be held at the Pickens County Rec Center, 1329 Camp Road, Jasper GA 30143 starting May 27th, 2025 at 8:00 am and ending at 5:00 pm on June 13th, 2025. On Election Day you may cast your vote at your assigned precinct during the hours of 7:00 am until 7:00 pm.
The Pickens County Board of Elections & Registration, will conduct a General Election on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., for the purpose of electing the following:
(A) The office of Mayor of the City of Nelson, Georgia, which will be elected at large for a term of four (4) years beginning on or about January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2029, with the incumbent being Sylvia Green.
(B) The office of City Councilmember of the City of Nelson, Georgia, which will be elected at large for a term of four (4) years beginning on or about January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2029, with the incumbent being William Taylor.
(C) The office of City Councilmember of the City of Nelson, Georgia, which will be elected at large for a term of four (4) years beginning on or about January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2029, with the incumbent being James Queen.
The qualifying period, to qualify for the above offices, shall open on Monday, August 18, 2025, and will continue for three days through Wednesday, August 20, 2025. The hours of qualifying each day shall be from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
The qualifying fee for each Council seat shall be $25.00. Prospective candidates may qualify at the administrative office of the Pickens County Board of Elections located at 3100 Camp Road, Suite B, Jasper, Georgia 30143. All qualified candidates are encouraged to run.
Advance voting for the election shall begin on Monday, October 14, 2025, and continue until Friday, October 31, 2025, including two Saturday voting days October 18th, 2025 and October 25, 2025. Advance voting will take place at the Pickens County Recreation Department, 1329 Camp Road, Jasper, Georgia 30143. Election Day, November 4, 2025, registered voters from the City of Jasper will vote at their assigned precinct location: Jasper Municipal Court Room, 55 G.G. Lovell Street, Jasper GA 30143.
The general public is hereby informed that the City of Nelson, Georgia is considering amendments to its Zoning Ordinance to amend its tree protection and landscaping ordinances. The City Council will hold a public hearing on April 7, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall, located at 1985 Kennesaw Avenue to decide whether to amend the Zoning Ordinance. This meeting is open to the public. Note: Georgia law requires that any opponent of a rezoning action who has made, within two (2) years immediately preceding the filing of the rezoning action, campaign contributions aggregating $250.00 or more to a local government official of the local government which will consider the application, file a campaign contributions disclosure with the governing authority of the respective local government at least five (5) calendar days prior to the first hearing by the local government on the rezoning application. As set forth in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1992, the City of Nelson does not discriminate on the basis of disability, and will assist citizens with special needs if given seven (7) working days advance notice.
